Youth Leadership Training: FAQ

Scouts Canada’s new Youth Leadership Training program has been developed to ensure our leadership workshops are aligned with The Canadian Path and relevant to today’s youth.

Scouts Canada’s new Youth Leadership Training has been developed by a team of senior youth volunteers from across Canada, with the support of experienced adult Scouters and Scouts Canada staff. The team included the National Youth Commissioner, Assistant National Youth Commissioners and Council Youth Commissioners.

No. Youth leadership at Scouts Canada and within our Canadian Path program empowers youth to decide for themselves whether or not they would like to participate programming like Youth Leadership Training.

Participants should select two or more Trail Cards for each of the five knowledge areas of the Youth Leadership Training program.

Next, they Plan, Do and Review the adventures described on those Trail Cards. When ten or more adventures have been concluded, participants should review the overall experience of their Youth Leadership Training.

See the Youth Leadership Training Facilitator Guide and Youth Leadership Training Participant Guides for more information.

Ideally, Youth Leadership Training is completed as a series at camp, as a dedicated workshop or over sequential weeknight meetings.

There are five steps to adding Youth Leadership Training to a profile on MyScouts.ca.

Step 1 – Find the youth who has completed his or her Youth Leadership Training: Login to MyScouts.ca and use the ‘Find an individual’ option to find the youth who has completed his or her Youth Leadership Training. Alternatively, use the ‘Find an Organization’ option to find the Group and select the youth from the list of members.

Step 2 – Select ‘Add Training’: Found under ‘Admin Options’ within ‘My Menu’.

Step 3 – Select Youth Leadership Training: Include the training that corresponds with the youth’s Section.

Step 4 – Add Training Details: Add dates and approvals as per the generated fields and select save. Youth Leadership Training is now added to the youth’s profile!

Step 5 – View the newly added Youth Leadership Training: To see the newly added Youth Leadership Training, return to the youth’s MyScouts account. Youth Leadership Training will be listed within the youth’s profile under ‘My Training’.

No, Youth Leadership Training is not a requirement for the Top Section Award; however, time committed to facilitating Youth Leadership Training can be included when tracking hours of community service. Similarly, youth may organize a Youth Leadership Training workshop for members in younger Sections as a Top Section Award service project.

No. Any youth can take part in Youth Leadership Training, regardless of past leadership training experience. There are no prerequisites for Youth Leadership Training.

Yes, Scouters can facilitate Youth Leadership Training; however, it is best to have senior youth facilitate for youth from younger Sections whenever possible. It may be helpful to coordinate with a Section from another Group to make this possible, or to arrange Youth Leadership Training for youth from a number of Groups at the same time (likewise facilitated by more senior youth).

Contact your Council Relationship Manager or Scouting Relationship Manager for support to host Youth Leadership Training.

Youth Leadership Training badges are worn on the left sleeve of the Cub, Scout, Venturer and Rover uniforms, just below the Council crest.

Yes, badges are available in-person at Scout Shops across Canada and Scoutshop.ca.

Scouts Canada’s new Youth Leadership Training helps our organization to better fulfill our Mission: To help develop well-rounded youth, better prepared for success in the world.

Youth Leadership Training supports personal progression and fosters a variety of leadership styles. The program is by no means a “one size fits all” approach—it is both flexible and youth-led. Best of all, Youth Leadership Training is fun! There are opportunities for many different games and activities, all of which help youth to become stronger and more confident leaders.

FAST, FLEX and FOCUS are no longer supported programs; however, youth who have completed these programs should still be celebrated, and what insights and techniques they gained through these programs remain valid and valuable. Scouts Canada’s new Youth Leadership Training better reflects the practices of The Canadian Path and offers a great program opportunity in service of our Mission: To help develop well-rounded youth, better prepared for success in the world.

Yes. The new Youth Leadership Training offers new content, new adventures and new skills for youth who have already taken part in FAST, FLEX or FOCUS training.

Absolutely! Youth who have completed FAST, FLEX and FOCUS should continue to proudly wear their badges on their uniforms if they so choose.

The resources currently available on the Youth Leadership Training webpage do not necessarily represent final versions. Resources will be updated in light of survey responses from participants and facilitators. Additional resources will be added to this webpage on an ongoing basis.

Pre-orders for printed Youth Leadership Training kits will be offered through Scoutshop.ca beginning in early 2019. Youth Leadership Training kits will be shipped by spring of 2019. By the time Youth Leadership Training kits ship, Youth Leadership Training resources online will be fully updated.

Trail Cards are currently available for the Beaver, Cub and Scout Sections, with a limited yet growing selection for Venturers and Rovers. More Trail Cards will be added to this webpage in the months ahead, so check back when planning a Youth Leadership Training workshop.

Aside from Trail Cards, Youth Leadership Training resources include a Facilitator Guide and Section-specific Participant Guides. Certificates and badges are available.
