Welcome

Welcome to Scout Scene! Scouts Canada’s National quarterly newsletter. In each edition, we’ll share updates on fundraising, national initiatives and highlight some of the great partnerships that help support Scouting youth across this great country.

Scouts: Always Up for a Challenge!

After the overwhelming response to the spring Great 8 Challenge, Scouts Canada is poised to launch another fall Challenge, aimed at getting kids back to Scouting while supporting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Around the World in 60 Days Challenge will take youth to all corners of the world, learning about different cultures, biodiversity and the climates of different countries.

Collaborating with National Scouting Organizations (NSOs) from five different continents and eight different countries, youth will get to see the impact first-hand that the Scouting movement has had world-wide. Videos from the NSO’s will kick-start each week’s challenge and youth will discover how easily activities can connect and impact SDGs. Youth can look forward to learning about things like how to transport water and the connection to SDG #2 Zero Hunger.  Or how to build a boat and its connection to SDG #14 Life Below Water.  In addition, the weekly challenges are supported by challenge partners such as Ocean Wise, Zero Waste Canada and 4H Canada, and allow youth to expand their knowledge and learn more about how these organizations are supporting a healthy and sustainable future.

The goal of the challenge is two-fold: to encourage as many unique youth adventures across the country as possible during the eight weeks and to demonstrate that collectively, every small activity or challenge that Scouts do across the country, can build towards reaching a more sustainable planet for the future.

Be sure to keep up with all the fun when the Around the World in 60 Days Challenge kicks off on Oct 4th, 2021.  Follow along on our Scouts Canada social media channels (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) or by checking out the hashtag #ExplorersNeeded.

Truth & Reconciliation Week and Upcoming Listening Sessions

The Government of Canada recently passed legislation to make September 30th  a federal statutory holiday called the “National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.”  This day provides an opportunity for all Canadians to recognize and commemorate the legacy of residential schools. The week around the occasion, September 27th to October 1st, is Truth & Reconciliation Week.

As an organization we will be encouraging members to participate in an activity that builds their understanding about what Indigenous Reconciliation means in Canada and support them in their own learning.

LISTENING SESSIONS

As we begin the process of learning about the Reconciliation movement in Canada, hearing from our Scouts Canada community is an important ongoing component of our journey.

INDIGENOUS SCOUTERS: WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU

Our first listening session will be an open Consultation Session with Indigenous Scouters. This will be an opportunity to receive early advice and recommendations from our existing Indigenous community members.

We are early in our journey. We invite our Indigenous members of the Scouting movement in Canada to have a conversation with volunteers, youth, and our Director of Diversity and Inclusion to recommend how our organization must go forward.

Thursday October 7th 1:30 PM EST 10:30 AM PST 2:30 PM ATL REGISTER NOW

In this early stage, we ask our broader membership: what are your biggest needs, thoughts, and suggestions around Reconciliation?  Join us in a listening session at your convenience! We would love to hear from you.
