Apply to the Youth Spokesperson Program

Scouts Canada is looking for outgoing youth members between the ages of 11-26 (Scouts to Rovers) that want to share their Scouting Adventures with the media and wider Scouting community. If you are a personable, friendly youth member that likes to shine in the spotlight or write compelling stories behind the scenes, then you should apply to the Youth Spokesperson program.

As a Scouts Canada Youth Spokesperson (YSP) you will get the opportunity to not only participate in media interviews, but also write articles for Scouts Canada’s various publications, pitch stories to national news outlets, give presentations to your local council, or join in the conversation online with social media.

What will you gain from the program?

Members of the Youth Spokesperson Program will gain valuable knowledge and experience in media production. This is a great opportunity to gain real-world experience for those looking to pursue future careers in journalism, media production, film, writing, graphic design, media relations, advocacy and photography.

What does a Youth Spokesperson do?

  • Media interviews: television, radio, print;
  • Media support at local events;
  • Contributes to Scouts Canada publications through writing, photography or video;
  • Acts as talent in Scouts Canada video productions;
  • Acts as emcee at Scouting events;
  • Gives presentations to local councils on key topics
  • Assists with social media campaigns for Scouting events like Good Turn Week & Scout Popcorn,
  • And most importantly, YSPs HAVE FUN!

Application Criteria

  • Be an active, registered Scout, Venturer Scout or Rover Scout between the ages of 11-26;
  • Have excellent communication skills in English or French;
  • Ability to learn and articulate Scouts Canada key messages on a wide variety of topics;
  • Work with their local Councils to help communicate key messages to other Scouting youth and Scouters;
  • Commit to a two-year term that is renewable upon reapplication;
  • Be available for monthly conference calls (no long-distance fees will be incurred);
  • Engage media in their local Area and respond when called upon to act as a Scouts Canada official Youth Spokesperson;
  • Assist with the production of content for newsletters, websites, social media outlets, and pitch stories to local media;
  • Visibly participate in Scouts Canada social media campaigns and engage audiences;
  • Act as advocates for Scouts Canada’s program.

Things we are on the lookout for

  • Social media savviness;
  • Youth that can write great stories;
  • Youth that love producing and editing their own videos;
  • Friendly youth that like to make new friends and have FUN!

  • Current Resume
  • Recent jpeg photo of yourself
  • Short video (no more than two minutes) telling us why you want to be a YSP (Mandatory)
  • A short one-page essay about why you love Scouting
