Alphabet Hike

Let's get outside! Why not try taking an Alphabet Hike to explore the outdoors? Make a list of the different things you see on your hike and see if you can find something for each letter of the alphabet.

Plan

  • Where are you going to go on your hike?
  • When will you go on your hike?
  • What weather do you expect?
  • How will you dress?
  • What should you pack? What will you need for this adventure?

Do

  • As a team or on your own, make note of the different things you see while hiking – see if you can find something for each letter of the alphabet!
  • If you don’t want to write things down, say things out loud as you see them. You can start by finding something that starts with A, then move to B, then C, etc.

Review

  • What do you know now that you did not know before?
  • How did you and your friends get along on this adventure?
  • What would you change next time?
  • What did other people see that you did not?
  • Remember to submit your activities on our Scouts for Sustainability Take Action Map

Keep it Simple

  • Rather than having youth find things for each letter on their own, create a scavenger hunt list with an item for each letter (e.g. acorn, birch tree, etc). Youth can check the items off as they see them. If you use laminated sheets and dry erase markers, you can use the same list multiple times! Pictures of items would also be a nice touch for youth who aren’t strong readers.
  • Draw attention to items that are found, so that every youth has the opportunity to see them and does not miss out on anything.
