Learn to Compost

Did you know that when organic waste decomposes in a landfill it produces a greenhouse gas called methane? Start a compost where you can dispose of food waste without producing methane!

Plan

  • What type of compost will you build? What supplies will you need?
  • What can you put in your compost?
  • What will you do with the compost you produce?

Do

  • There are many different composting methods you can try, including open air composting and worm farm composting.
  • Decide which method will work best for you. Find a place to set up your compost and start composting!
  • You can compost yard waste and non-animal food waste. After your waste decomposes you can use your compost to provide nutrients to a garden.

Review

  • How long did it take for waste to decompose? Did some types of waste decompose faster than others?
  • What affects do you think worms and other bugs have on the decomposition of food waste?
  • What reasons do you think people have for not composting? How can we encourage people to compost?
  • Remember to submit your activities on our Scouts for Sustainability Take Action Map

Materials

  • A bin
  • Newspaper and dried leaves
  • Compost materials (ex: food waste)
  • Water in a spray bottle

Keep it Simple

  • If you don’t have time to start your own compost, see if a composting program exists in your city. Some Canadian cities have green bin programs where compost is collected each week, just like the garbage.

Take it Further

  • For an added challenge, perform a scientific experiment! Try different composting methods and see which works best. Which method allows waste to decompose the fastest?
