Paper Prototyping

Create a paper prototype! Learn about prototyping and the product development cycle as you create a paper prototype of a VR world.

Back to Activity Finder

Plan

  • What supplies will you need for this activity?
  • What do you already know about prototypes?
  • Why is prototyping useful?
  • What problem in the world will you use VR to help or bring awareness to? Global warming, gender equality, water consumption, food waste, etc.

Do

  • In pairs or small groups, you will act as VR game designers who are tasked with bringing awareness to your chosen cause by creating a VR world.
  • Using construction paper, create a 3D low fidelity prototype out of paper. Low fidelity means a prototype that only has some of its content and visual design completed. Your prototype will look similar to a pop-up book.
  • Try testing out different colours and materials to determine what fits your theme best. Use sticky tack rather than glue so that you can change your prototype or move things as needed. Try to find creative ways to make your prototype interactive!
  • After most groups have completed their prototypes, have each group decide on who will be a “product designer” and who will be a “user”. Users will test prototypes of nearby groups and provide feedback on things they liked and things that could use improvement.
  • Product designers will stay with their prototype and tell users what their theme is. Product designers should see how users interact with their prototype and ask if there is anything they find confusing.
  • Halfway through, switch users and product designers, so that everyone can try both roles.
  • Once all groups have had the chance to get some feedback, try to improve your prototypes based on the feedback.

Review

  • Did your prototype look how you imagined it would?
  • Was it easy for your users to understand your prototype? What would you change to make it easier to understand?
  • How does making prototypes help when designing something?
  • Remember to submit your activities on our Scouts for Sustainability Take Action Map

Materials

  • Pens, pencils
  • Construction paper (or cardstock)
  • Sticky tack
  • Scissors
  • Markers

Keep it Simple

Start by drawing your prototype before building it. If you draw out your plan first, you might have an easier time building. You can even collect feedback on your drawing before you build it.

Take it Further

After prototyping, create a high fidelity (almost complete) version of your VR world using CoSpaces.io – using CLC’s “Envisioning a Better World in VR” lesson plan as a guide.
