Plan

  • What materials do you need for this activity?
  • How many people are needed to play this game?

Do

  • Participants have ten seconds to name five things that fit into a category of your choosing.
  • Once given a category, “Five things you’d find in the sky” for example, begin counting down out loud immediately from 10 seconds. Keep track on your fingers each one they get correct (it’s harder than you would think).
  • Discourage others from chiming in answers while someone else is playing. The pressure of being on the spot and having the time counted down makes this game MUCH harder than you would think it should be.

Review

  • How could you make this activity more challenging?
  • What did you like about this activity? Why?
  • What strategies did you use to help you succeed?

Keep it Simple

  • Work in small teams or pairs rather than solo. This might help to take pressure off of people – make sure that everyone gets a turn!
  • You can also raise the time limit to 15 or 20 seconds if needed

Take it Further

  • This game’s challenge level will really vary based on how specific your categories are. Looking for an added challenge? Try a category like “national flags with the colour blue on them” or “Beatles songs.” Try to pick categories that will be challenging for people, but not impossible!
