Plan

  • What is the difference between eating a vegetarian diet and eating a vegan diet?
    • A vegetarian diet does not include any meat, while a vegan diet does not include any animal products at all (dairy, eggs, gelatin, etc.).
    • Some vegetarians may choose not to eat other animal products in addition to meat, while some vegans may choose to be more or less strict with which animal products they consume.
  • What are some reasons why someone might choose to become a vegetarian or vegan?
  • How could you adapt some of your regular camp meals so that they are meatless?
  • What are some new vegetarian/vegan recipes you want to try?
  • How can you ensure that you are still getting all the required nourishment from your vegetarian/vegan meals?

Do

  • Design a meal plan which includes only vegetarian or vegan options
  • Purchase the products on your shopping list.
  • Cook and enjoy your vegetarian/vegan meals!

Review

  • Did you miss having meat on your menu? Why or why not?
  • How difficult was it to plan meatless meals?
  • How could you have improved the meals/recipes that you were using?
  • Was there a price difference in the food budget of this camp?
  • Now that you’ve experienced it, how would you feel about going meatless for a meal?  For a day?  For a week? For a month?
  • Remember to submit your activities on our Scouts for Sustainability Take Action Map

Keep it Simple

  • Going vegetarian or vegan for a whole weekend can be challenging – start small and  try it out for one meal at your next camp

Take it Further

  • Talk to your family about the benefits of vegetarianism/veganism.  Is this something that you can try with your family more often?
