Crew Scouters

Let's go on an adventure!

Crew Scouters – Be prepared to Paddle Your Own Canoe!

Rover Scouting is for young adults who are 18 to 26 years old. This is the most senior Section of the five Scouts Canada Sections. Rover Scouting helps with the transition from adolescence to adulthood and supports young adults with their integration into adult society. The challenges for young adults of this age are many, including figuring out what they want to do with their lives, doing well in school, getting a job and being successful at it, navigating relationships, transitioning into adult life and responsibilities, and seeking to make an impact in society. Rover Scouts provides young adults with a program and a support system to help them achieve their personal goals within groups of like-minded individuals.

Crew Scouters were called “Advisors” in the past, and this remains your role as a Crew Scouter facilitating the Canadian Path program. Provide helpful advice to your Crew, and give the Rover Scouts every opportunity to lead and to learn by doing.

PLAN YOUR PROGRAM

The Canadian Path program is the way Scouting is done in Canada. From Beaver Scouts to Rover Scouts, youth take the lead in deciding what program areas they will pursue, organizing ways to achieve these goals and collectively reflecting on their experience after the goal is met. With support from adult Scouters, this “Plan-Do-Review” method is one of the many ways that The Canadian Path program can help youth develop into critical thinkers, extend their personal progression, and encourage active participation in an inclusive team dynamic.

Plan: With the Canadian Path, all youth are involved in the planning process—brainstorming, making suggestions and providing input about the Program Areas they are interested in. Then, with guidance from their Scouters, youth select the activities they will pursue along their Path. Scouters engage all youth in the planning for age-appropriate activities and adventures.

You can read more about the Canadian Path here to get a bit more familiar with it. For new Scouters, you will also be learning more in your Wood Badge Trainings. Visit the David Huestis Centre for more training opportunities such as the Canadian Path Fundamentals training.

The Rover Personal Development Plan

As a Scouter in the most senior Section, the focus shifts from teamwork within a Section, to mentoring youth to help them set and track personal goals.  The Rover Personal Development Plan outline can assist Rover’s in defining and establishing their personal goals.

Scouts Canada signed a Memorandum of Understanding with The Duke of Edinburgh International Awards in 2010. This formalized the cooperative relationship that has existed on an international level between the two organizations for many years.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING

Scouts Canada’s Youth Leadership Training courses have been created for all five Sections, from Beaver Scouts to Rover Scouts! In fact, the program was spearheaded by a team of youth from across Canada.

Each group of youth participants can create a unique collection of adventures to explore five leadership knowledge areas, including Becoming a Leader, Communication, Plan-Do-Review, Problem Solving and Teamwork. Youth from older Sections facilitate the adventures—while adult Scouters take a step back from the action.

VOCATIONAL ROVERS

Within the Rover Scouts Section there are some groups that are geared towards specific vocations, such as First-Aid, Police, Fire, Paramedic and even Culinary! These Rover Sections generally focus on specialized training in a particular field.  Often these groups will be a combined Venturer/Rover group.

Groups focused on emergency training may be referred to as “MedVents” and are often sponsored by local Emergency Services. MedVent groups are an opportunity for youth to learn about Emergency Medical Service, Policing, and Firefighting and there are a number of these specialized groups across Canada.  Check out Medvents.ca a site maintained by the 1st Downsview Group which provides more information on Medical Venturers/Rovers.  These groups put their training to good use by providing volunteer First-Aid and support at Scout camps and charitable events.  There are also Police Venturers/Rover and Fire Venturer/Rover groups that are sponsored by their local police/fire departments.  These groups often assist with local crime prevention initiatives, community events, learn firefighter procedures and equipment and train in medical first response.
