Work Term: June 16 - August 28, 2024

General Description: 

The Head Cook is responsible for the daily operation of the camp’s kitchen and dining hall. They are responsible for providing meals to the staff 3 times daily, oversee food orders, always maintain a clean kitchen in accordance with public health requirements and will manage portion control. The Head Cook is responsible for the daily operation of the camp’s kitchen and dining hall. coaches, trains, and leads the kitchen staff as well as properly delegating tasks when needed.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Be an effective role model to campers and This includes but is not limited to:
    • Living the vision, mission, and values of Scouts Canada
    • Respectful treatment of all campers/staff
    • Compliance with all rules/regulations
    • Appropriate communication and interactions prior to, during and after camp
    • Maintaining a clean & safe work/living environment and general behavior throughout the employment period
    • Displaying enthusiasm for activities, personal cleanliness, dress, speech, manners, and positive relations with campers/staff.
  • Manages in a multi-faceted environment with competing demands while utilizing the team for ultimate efficiency;
  • Manage, train and coach employees in all areas, including food management;
  • Provide leadership to a team of kitchen employees, which includes preparing work schedules, responding to requests for direction, etc.
  • Actively lead, preparation of all meal activities from planning to service and clean up;
  • Control and direct the food preparation process and any other relative activities;
  • Construct menus with new or existing culinary creations ensuring variety and quality;
  • Forecast supply needs, estimate costs and prepare food orders and supply orders;
  • Maintain a safe and sanitary kitchen environment;
  • Responsible for the safety of all kitchen staff
  • Exhibit, train and enforce all proper food handling techniques and equipment maintenance;
  • Adhere to all health and safety policies
  • Develop a cleaning schedule for each kitchen/dining hall and assign tasks
  • Responsible for orderly and secure storage of food
  • Conduct pre-camp and post-camp food and equipment inventories
  • Coordinate food preparation for bookings outside of the summer camp program
  • Work closely with other departments
  • Help out with other duties outside of this description
  • Contribute to the camp annual report 

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum: Standard First Aid with CPR Certification, Pleasure Craft Operator Card, Food Handlers Certificate or equivalent.
  • Completes Scouts Canada screening process including a clear Police Records Check, with Vulnerable sector check and all required training by the date provided by the Camp Director.
  • Enthusiastic and energetic.
  • Valid Criminal Record Check including vulnerable sector search or willing to obtain one (n/a to applicants under the age of 18).
  • Successful applicants will be required to complete the Scouts Canada Screening and Training requirements.

  • Proven leadership, teamwork, planning & administrative abilities.
  • Strong communication & customer service skills.
  • Experienced in working in a camp environment.
  • Experience in food service which includes prepping, cooking, cleaning, and storage of.
  • Ability to work to deadlines
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team.
