How it Works

To earn the Duke of Edinburgh Award, participants must complete a series of activities and challenges across four key areas:

  1. Community Service (Including Volunteering with Scouts Canada): This involves giving back to the community through volunteer work. Participants choose a cause or organization they're passionate about, which can include activities such as volunteering with Scouts Canada, and dedicate a set number of hours to it.
  2. Physical Recreation: This focuses on improving physical fitness and overall health. Participants choose a physical activity or sport that interests them, set personal goals, and engage in regular training or practice.

  3. Skill Development: This category encourages participants to acquire a new skill or enhance an existing one. This could be anything from learning a musical instrument, honing a craft, or developing a proficiency in a new language.

  4. Adventurous Journey: This is all about outdoor exploration, teamwork, and self-reliance. Participants plan and embark on an adventurous expedition, often involving activities like hiking, camping, or orienteering.

Additionally, participants choose one of three award levels (Bronze, Silver, or Gold) based on their age and the level of commitment they're prepared to undertake. Each level has specific requirements and time commitments. For example, the Bronze Award typically takes six months to complete, while the Silver and Gold Awards require longer periods and greater levels of commitment.

Throughout their journey, participants maintain a record of their activities and achievements, which is later reviewed and verified by their Award Leader or Assessor. Once all the requirements are met and verified, participants receive their Duke of Edinburgh Award.

The Award is not a competition against others, but rather a personal challenge to push oneself and grow as an individual. It encourages participants to step out of their comfort zones, develop new skills, and contribute positively to their communities. Ultimately, the Duke of Edinburgh Award is a testament to a participant's dedication, determination, and personal growth.
